Buses

The Wake County Public School System provides bus transportation to all eligible students in their base school assignment who live one-and-a-half miles or more from school and to students with identified special needs.  The system’s transportation department is committed to providing these students with safe, efficient and reliable transportation service that contributes to their overall academic success.

Each day, more than 75,000 students in Wake County are transported on 900 buses, covering more than 17 million miles a year.  Safety is a high priority on these school buses and a group effort.  Thanks to Wake County’s students, parents, teachers, school administrators, drivers and transportation staff, there have been no instances of school bus occupant fatalities during Wake County Schools’ history.

 

All students who ride WCPSS buses are expected to board and depart their buses at the designated stops.  For the 2010-2011 school year, STUDENTS MAY ONLY RIDE THE BUS TO WHICH THEY ARE ASSIGNED.  Each student is responsible for ensuring his/her own safety as well as that of others on the bus.  This may be accomplished by:

  • Showing respect to the driver and others at all times.
  • Entering and departing the bus in turn without pushing or crowding.
  • Remaining seated at all times.
  • Talking in a reasonable voice and not calling out through the windows.
  • Not eating or drinking on the bus.

The bus driver has authority over and responsibility for the safe operation of the bus.  He or she is also responsible for maintaining order on the bus.  The driver will report to Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School administration and misconduct or rule violations that occur.

Consequences for misbehavior on a WCPSS school bus include:

  • 1st Offense: After receiving the report from the bus driver, the administration will notify the parent by phone call or letter.  Depending on the severity of the offense, the student may receive only a warning.
  • 2nd Offense(s): The student may be suspended from the bus for a period of time as determined by administration.
  • Additional Offense(s): The student may be suspended from the bus for a period of time up to the remainder of the school year.
